Anan Bear Photographer Wins National Award

    Juneau-based photographer Mark Kelley has been photographing the Southeast for 43 years, but it’s the photos he took during his 13 visits to Anan Creek that earned him top portfolio honors in the contest 2022 photo from National Wildlife magazine.

    Juneau photographer Mark Kelley has been to the Anan Wildlife Observatory 13 times, which turned out to be a lucky number for his portfolio of bear photos. A collection of her 10 favorite photos of Anan won first place in the portfolio category of the National Wildlife Federation’s annual competition.

    “It captures something magical and mystical about the place,” National Wildlife magazine editorial director Lisa Moore said last Friday.

    After so many years of watching bears, “he knows their behavior” and has the patience to wait for the photo that will tell Anan’s story, she says…
