    HARRISONBURG, Va. – Quarterback James Madison Todd Rye was named VaSID Offensive Player of the Year and running back Kaelon Black was selected as Offensive Rookie of the Year, as Virginia Sports Information Directors rolled out the 2022 College Division Football Team on Tuesday.

    Centeio became JMU’s first VaSID Offensive Player of the Year since Bryan Schor won the award in 2016, and Black became the program’s second consecutive Offensive Rookie of the Year in the state.

    Named 2022 Conference Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, Centeio has completed nearly 64% of his passes, throwing for 2,697 yards and 25 touchdowns with just five interceptions. He also rushed for 393 yards and seven touchdowns.

    The second-team All-Sun Belt quarterback led all players in the league with four weekly awards and finished the season second in the FBS in yards per completion (14.9) and pass attempts (9). .5), fourth in pass efficiency (169.0), seventh in points-per-game responsibility (19.4), 13th in total offense (306.3) and 24th in passing touchdowns (25). He was also on mid-season watch lists for the Maxwell Award, Davey O’Brien Award, Manning Award, and CFPA Trophy for National Performer of the Year.

    Black, returning from a season-ending injury a season ago, had 510 total yards and five touchdowns in JMU’s first FBS season. He rushed for 333 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 4.8 yards per carry. He also had 17 catches for 177 yards and two scores. Black was also named to the Paul Hornung Award Honor Roll following JMU’s win at App State, in which he had a season-high 108 all-purpose yards and scored the game-winning touchdown.

    JMU led the Commonwealth with 11 All-State winners and tied William & Mary with six First-team selections. It’s also the seventh straight season the Dukes have had at least 10 All-States.

    Joining Centeio on the All-State first team was running back Percy Agyei-Obesewide receiver Kris Thortonoffensive lineman Nick Kidwell and defensive linemen Jacques Charpentier and Isaac the Great.

    Winning the second team laurels was tight Drew Painterdefensive lineman Jamare Edwardslinebacker Bull Jonessecurity Sam Kidd and bettor sam clark.

    Agyei-Obese is a three-time All-State first-team winner, as he also won the awards in 2019 and 2020. Thornton is also a three-time All-State member, being named first-team in 2021 and second-team in 2020. Kidwell and Ukwu are also two-time All-State winners, as Kidwell was first team in 2021 and Ukwu was second team a year ago.

    Other big winners include William & Mary linebacker John Pius (defensive player of the year), Liberty comeback specialist Shedro Louis (special teams player of the year), head coach William & Mary Mike London (Coach of the Year) and W&M cornerback Jalen. Jones (Defensive Rookie of the Year).

    VaSID nominates 44 all-state teams in 23 sports each year, as well as an all-state varsity team and an all-sports champion in the college and college divisions. VaSID membership is open to all media relations professionals working at a university or conference in the state of Virginia.
