A POLEGLASS-based construction company is set to return as an event partner for the eleventh Blackboard Awards.

Flynn Construction has supported the awards for the past six years and will again support our education heroes at next month’s ceremony at the Europa Hotel.

Gareth Osbourne, Bid Manager at Flynn Construction, explained that the awards are close to the hearts of their managing director, Aidan Flynn, and his father Maurice.

‘We have been providing services to the Education Authority for over 20 years and continue this work under our maintenance contract in Greater Belfast,’ he said.

“For the past few years, we have closed for a few weeks during the pandemic and then returned to work. Seeing how teachers and students coped with this was nothing short of remarkable and we are very proud to be able to help teachers and staff trying to educate children in what has been a difficult time.

“Last October we entered the Federation of Construction Employers Awards against quite stiff competition, and we won the School Authority Partnership Award for a project in North Belfast where there was a need for 120 additional places for children with special educational needs.

“We worked in partnership with the Education Authority and took Belfast’s old music school and converted it into a new school in the space of five weeks.

“It was a very fast and interesting project to be involved in. It was difficult, but the children entered the first day as if they were going to a brand new school.”

Gareth told us that as an organization they appreciate the opportunity to give back to the community.

“We nominated the principal of Harberton Special School for an award this year because he was instrumental in bringing the project to fruition. He is so passionate about children and it rubbed off on us.

The Blackboard Awards will take place at the Europa Hotel on Friday 3rd February and will highlight the incredible work of our schools.
