The NHL Awards races have seen an upheaval since our last edition.
(Well, except the one where Patrice Bergeron is the chef. You know, like every year.)
But the races for most valuable player, top defenseman, top rookie, most dominant goaltender and coach of the year all have new favorites. Such is the unpredictable dynamic of an unpredictable NHL season.
Welcome to the NHL Awards Watch for January. We surveyed a broad selection of Professional Hockey Writers Association voters anonymously to get a sense of where the wind is blowing for current leaders. We’ve made sure it’s a cross section of the whole league, trying to get as many perspectives as possible.
Remember that the PHWA is voting for finalists Hart, Norris, Calder, Selke and Lady Byng; broadcasters vote for Jack Adams; and the general managers manage the Vézina. Also keep in mind the unofficial “you have to be in it to win” protocol for the Hart and the Jack Adams.
